Reverse osmosis is the finest filtration you can put on a domestic water supply. Water is pushed through a semi permeable membrane that rejects dissolved solids at the molecular level, so it takes out the things a cartridge filter physically cannot: nitrate, fluoride, sodium, sulphate, heavy metals and total dissolved solids. If your water test has a number on it that a sediment or carbon filter will not touch, RO is usually the answer.

It is a drinking water system, not a whole house system. RO produces water slowly and sends a portion to drain, so it feeds a dedicated tap at the kitchen sink rather than the whole house. That is the correct way to use it, not a limitation.

You also need an inline remineralising cartridge. Treat it as part of the system, not an accessory. RO is indiscriminate: it rejects nitrate, fluoride and dissolved salts, and it rejects the calcium and magnesium along with them. The water that comes out is very pure, slightly acidic and tastes flat, and low pH water is mildly aggressive towards the copper and brass on the treated line. A remineralising cartridge on the outlet puts the minerals back, lifts the pH towards neutral and gives the water its taste back. We fit one on every RO system we install.

• RO270: 270 litres per day, the standard domestic under sink system. Right for a household wanting treated drinking and cooking water
• ROS2700: continuous flow system, supplied without a faucet. For higher demand, light commercial, or where the treated water feeds more than one outlet
• What RO removes: nitrate, fluoride, sodium, sulphate, heavy metals, dissolved salts and most of what remains after sediment and carbon
• Pre filtration is required: the membrane is the expensive part and sediment or chlorine will destroy it. Both systems run pre filters, and those get changed on schedule
• Membrane life: typically 2 to 3 years on good pre filtration, less on hard or dirty water

Why We Like It

RO is the tool we reach for when a water test comes back with nitrate or fluoride on it, because nothing else on the shelf will shift them. It is worth being straight about the trade off: it wastes some water to drain, it fills slowly, and it strips the good minerals along with the bad, which is why it belongs on a drinking tap rather than the whole house.
