Puretec CB Series Carbon Block Cartridge

Short description

The Puretec CB series is a bonded activated carbon block cartridge. Carbon block strips chlorine, taste and odour out of the water, and because the carbon is bonded into a solid block rather than loose granules it filters sediment at the same time. Most grades carry SilverPlus, a bacteriostatic treatment that stops bacteria growing inside the cartridge between services.

Choosing a cartridge

The micron number is the size of particle it stops, and smaller is not automatically better. A fine cartridge in the first stage blocks quickly, drops your pressure and costs more to run. Stage it coarse then fine. Size is decided by your housing: slimline is 2.5 inch, jumbo (MaxiPlus) is 4.5 inch, and the 10 or 20 inch is the length. Full guidance is in the description below.

The Puretec CB series is a bonded activated carbon block cartridge. Most grades carry SilverPlus, a bacteriostatic treatment that stops bacteria growing inside the cartridge between services.

Which grade? 5 and 10 micron are the standard choices for chlorine, taste and odour on town supply, and they are what goes in most under sink and whole house setups. 0.5 micron Cyst Reduction steps up to removing cryptosporidium and giardia cysts, worth it on roof, creek or bore water. 0.5 micron Chloramine Reduction is for supplies dosed with chloramine rather than free chlorine, which ordinary carbon struggles with. 0.5 micron Heavy Metal targets lead and other dissolved metals, typically an older plumbing problem.

Put it second, not first. Carbon block is fine filtration and it is not cheap. On tank or bore water, run a sediment cartridge ahead of it or the carbon clogs with grit long before its carbon is used up. On town water it can usually run on its own. If you are unsure whether you have chlorine or chloramine, or you suspect metals, get the water tested before you spend money on the specialist grades.

Which size? Slimline is the standard 2.5 inch diameter cartridge. Jumbo, which Puretec calls MaxiPlus, is 4.5 inch and takes far more flow and far more dirt before it blocks, which is why whole house systems use it. The 10 inch and 20 inch measurement is the length. Your housing decides this, not your preference, so measure the old cartridge or read the housing label before you order.
