TankSafe is a rainwater tank purifier that kills over 99.9% of E.coli, viruses and other bacteria in stored water. It is not chlorine. The active components are hydrogen peroxide and a trace of silver nitrate, so it is tasteless, odourless and chlorine free, and it stays in the tank protecting the water for up to two months after dosing.
When to use it. After a tank clean, after a dead possum or bird gets in, after flooding or a boil water notice, or as routine protection on any tank supplying drinking water. It also suits carted water and water pumped from bores or dams.
How much to dose
The rate is 65 ml per 1,000 litres of the water in the tank. Dose on what is actually in there, not the tank's rated capacity, because most tanks are not full.

Which size to buy. A typical 25,000 litre NZ household tank takes about 1.6 litres a dose, so the 2 litre bottle is one treatment and the 5 litre is about three. If you are dosing routinely rather than once, buy up.
Dosing and checking it worked
Pour it in, then allow 24 hours contact time. Test at 24 hours with a TankSafe test strip to confirm the dose landed: immerse for 2 seconds, wait 30 seconds, compare against the colour chart. Retest every 2 to 3 weeks, or after significant rainfall, since fresh water dilutes what is in there.
The test strips are part of the process, not an accessory. Dosing without testing is guessing, and the strips are a few dollars.
Where UV still wins. TankSafe protects the stored water for up to two months at a time. A UV system treats continuously at the point of use and needs no dosing schedule. On a household drinking untreated roof water year round, UV is the set and forget answer; TankSafe is what you use to treat the tank itself, and what many people run on its own.
Not to be taken undiluted. Keep out of reach of children, and store out of direct sunlight.
