Most grades carry SilverPlus, a bacteriostatic treatment that stops bacteria growing inside the cartridge between services.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhich grade?\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003e5 and 10 micron\u003c\/strong\u003e are the standard choices for chlorine, taste and odour on town supply, and they are what goes in most under sink and whole house setups. \u003cstrong\u003e0.5 micron Cyst Reduction\u003c\/strong\u003e steps up to removing cryptosporidium and giardia cysts, worth it on roof, creek or bore water. \u003cstrong\u003e0.5 micron Chloramine Reduction\u003c\/strong\u003e is for supplies dosed with chloramine rather than free chlorine, which ordinary carbon struggles with. \u003cstrong\u003e0.5 micron Heavy Metal\u003c\/strong\u003e targets lead and other dissolved metals, typically an older plumbing problem.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePut it second, not first.\u003c\/strong\u003e Carbon block is fine filtration and it is not cheap. On tank or bore water, run a sediment cartridge ahead of it or the carbon clogs with grit long before its carbon is used up. On town water it can usually run on its own. If you are unsure whether you have chlorine or chloramine, or you suspect metals, get the water tested before you spend money on the specialist grades.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhich size?\u003c\/strong\u003e Slimline is the standard 2.5 inch diameter cartridge. Jumbo, which Puretec calls MaxiPlus, is 4.5 inch and takes far more flow and far more dirt before it blocks, which is why whole house systems use it. The 10 inch and 20 inch measurement is the length.
